Welcoming Orbis Flying Eye Hospital - A journey of light and care

Last week, Da Nang International Airport was honoured to welcome representatives from Orbis, the international non-profit organisation that operates the world’s only flying eye hospital.

This visit was part of a site assessment in preparation for an upcoming collaboration between Orbis and Da Nang Eye Hospital, planned for July and August 2026.

A flying hospital like no other
The Orbis Flying Eye Hospital is a truly unique initiative - a fully equipped aircraft that not only delivers eye care treatment but also provides medical training to local professionals.

For over 40 years, Orbis has flown to more than 200 countries and territories, bringing knowledge, skills, and hope to places that need it most.

In Vietnam, Orbis first arrived in Da Nang in 2006. Since then, it has carried out over 10 major healthcare projects in cities across the country, contributing to stronger eye care services at many leading hospitals.

Returning to Vietnam after 20 years
In 2026, Orbis will return to Da Nang for a 3-week programme. During this time, their flying eye hospital will work closely with local teams to provide advanced training for ophthalmologists, nurses, anaesthesiologists, and biomedical technicians.

Beyond professional training, the programme will also help raise public awareness about the importance of eye care, a vital part of health that is still often overlooked.

A small role in a meaningful mission
As the main air gateway to Central Vietnam, Da Nang International Airport is proud to support this meaningful mission.

Our team is working closely with Orbis and local partners to ensure a smooth and safe arrival for the flying hospital. We’re grateful for the opportunity to play a small part in helping this journey of light reach more people.
